The olympics is a wonderful event that brings together the world’s top athletes. With some AGORA students we watched the opening ceremony as well as many events on TV while we were in Canada. As it is being held in China everything was anounced in Chinese after anouncements in English and French. This was a great opportunity for the students with me as they are studying both English and French at AGORA!!

Thinking about events such as the olympics it really makes us realize how important languages are for international communication. And, being multi-lingual is much better than being simply bi-lingual! It is common knowledge that learning foreign languages becomes easier as we study more languages. It is not a coincidence that the children who speak the best English at AGORA are also learning French and some even Spanish as well.

At AGORA we encourage everyone to study French as well as English but your third language should be based on your interests and future goals in life. Other languages worth considering (for Japanese people), I believe are Chinese, Indonesion, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Swahili.

　オリンピックは、世界の最強アスリート達が集まる素晴らしいイベントです。私は、カナダに滞在中何人かのアゴラの生徒と一緒に開会式や競技をテレビで見ました。北京オリンピックでのアナウンスは、英語・フランス語・中国語で行われていました。私と共にテレビを見ていた生徒は、皆アゴラで英語とフランス語を学んでいたので、彼らにとってとても良い機会でした。
　オリンピックのように世界のイベントを思うと、言語というのは世界でコミュニケーションをとるのにとても重要だということをまた新たに思い知らされました。多言語話せるというのは、ただ２言語話せるよりもさらに素晴らしいことです。1つの言葉を学ぶより、たくさんの言葉を学ぶ方が簡単だということは良く知られている知識ですね。アゴラで一番英語が話せる生徒はフランス語・スペイン語をならっています。これと一致しているのです。
　アゴラでは、英語と同様フランス語を勉強することにも力を入れていますが三番目の言葉を学ぶには自分が興味を持ち人生の計画に合わせなくてはいけません。日本人にとっては、中国語・インドネシア語・韓国語・ロシア語・スペイン語・スワヒリ語は価値のある言葉ではないでしょうか

1912年に、友好の印として日本からアメリカに桜の木が贈られました。桜の木はワシントンD.C.に流れるポトマック川沿いに植えられ、4月の初旬に満開になるその景色は、みんなに親しまれています。アメリカの首都に桜を植えるというアイディアは、以前日本を訪れ、日本の桜を祖国に紹介したいと考えたアメリカ人が思いついたものでした。彼と、日本政府で高い地位についている友人との話し合いを通し、日本政府が桜の木を贈ることに決定しました。最初の船で送られた2000本は、残念ながら病気が付いて処分されましたが、それでも日本は二度目の船で3200本を送り、無事アメリカの税関を通りました。そのお礼として、 1915年にアメリカ政府から日本に花水木が贈られました。それらの木は日本全国のたくさんの街の並木となり、桜のすぐ後に咲き始めます。
Sakura trees were offered to the United States in 1912 as gift of friendship from the people of Japan. Planted along the Potomac river in Washington D.C. they are a popular sight in early April. The idea of planting these trees in the US capital was that of an American who had visited Japan and fell in love with the sakura tree. After discussing the idea with friends highly placed in the Japanese government Japan decided to offer the trees as a gift. The initial shipment of 2000 trees were unfortunately plagued by disease and had to be destroyed. Unfazed, Japan sent a second shipment, this time 3200 trees, and they successfully cleared US customs. By 1915 the United States responded with a gift of flowering dogwood trees to the people of Japan. These trees line many urban streets through out Japan and come into bloom soon after the sakura trees.

ネズミ年を、北アメリカやヨーロッパの人たちは、どうとらえているのでしょう？そうですね、ほとんどの人たちはあまり気にしないようです。中国からきた十二支は、主にアジア文化に興味のある人たちだけが使っているようです。そのかわり、カナダに暮らす人のほとんどは、西洋占星術の十二星座のことなら知っています。これらの星座は、牡羊座、牡牛座、双子座、蟹座、獅子座など、おおよそ月ごとに分かれています（詳しいリストはアゴラのオフィス、またはZodiac Signs.pdf）。西洋では一般的に、お互いが誕生日によってどの星座になるかをよく聞きあったりします。いろんな意味で、これは日本人が血液型をきく習慣に似ています。みなさんも自分の星座を英語で調べてみてはどうでしょう？西洋の人と話すときに役に立ちますよ。でも、西洋の国では血液型をきかないように！きっとみんなはあなたがドナー（献血者）を探しているのかと思うでしょう。実は私も、五年前にようやく自分の血液型を知りました… 　　　　　　　　　　　　

Year of the Mouse (or Rat if you prefer); how do people in North America and Europe relate to this? Well, it does not really mean much to most people. The twelve animals form the twelve signs of the Chinese Zodiac and tends to be referred to mainly by those interested in Asian culture. Most people in Canada are aware, instead, of the twelve signs of the Western Zodiac. These signs relate roughly to a one month period and include Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, etc. (a full list is available at the AGORA or Zodiac Signs.pdf). In social situations people often ask each other what sign they are, based on their birthday. Why not look up your own sign? It may come in handy when talking with Westerners. In many ways, this is very similar to the common Japanese practice of asking someone what their blood type is? But, do not ask about blood types in the west as they may think you are looking for a donor! As for myself, I only found out my blood type 5 years ago...

SEASON'S GREETINGS

クリスマスは、家族が集まりターキーの丸焼きなどの伝統料理をみんなで楽しむ日です。残ったお肉はパイやサンドイッチ、スープ、パスタなどにしてクリスマスの後にも食されます。それとひきかえ新年は、友達とパーティをして過ごすのがほとんどです。いろいろな意味で、カナダのクリスマスは日本の伝統的なお正月に似ていて、日本のクリスマスはカナダの１月１日に似ています。

Christmas is a time when families get together and enjoy traditional food such as roast turkey. The remaining meat is eaten over the following week in different forms such as pies, sandwiches, soups, and pasta. The new year, however, is most often spent at parties among friends. In many ways, Christmas in Canada resembles the traditional Japanese new year while Christmas in Japan is like January 1st in Canada!
