What does “ECO” really mean? It is actually from the word ecology or ecological. In September I was on local TV as part of a series on “ECO Lifestyles.” This followed a feature article about me in the hip magazine Dip, also on the same topic. My lifestyle has obviously caught the attention of many people but why? For close to 20 years I have been living in pretty much the same way but have always been conscious of the environment.
For me, minimizing waste is key. This includes energy, food, and items we use everyday. My whole house is heated in winter and I am warm enough wearing a T-shirt but my energy consumption is not excessive. Why? Good insulation and ventilation! Instead of recycling think about reducing your garbage and even reusing things where possible. For a more complete list see below.
My “enviromental awareness all started when I was in the 2nd grade. Our teacher showed us an animated movie (videos didn’t exist then!!) that taught us a simple idea: “Do not throw rubbish on the ground but instead look for a trash bin or bring it home!” The movie showed vivid images of how the world would become a terrible place if everyone just threw their rubbish anywhere they liked. It really sunk in and has really shaped my life.
I still find it shocking how some individuals have no respect for nature. Many find it ok to toss things out of their car, leave garbage lying around after having a picnic (imonikai) by a beautiful river, and even driving up to the mountain to discard old tires and appliances! I have climbed mount Fuji twice and must say I was shocked by all the trash.
Everything starts with education and teaching our children values. If we get this right we have a better chance that they will become responsible adults.
Here are a few things I do at home to minimize the impact my life has on the environment.
1. Composting all organics (except meats) such as vegetable and fruit peelings help reduce garbage and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers in my garden.
2. In my home we have various reusable bags that we use when going shopping. These include a special bag for French bread and a larger one for general groceries.
3. Good insulation on the house alows me to minimize heat loss in the winter and keep warm without using too electricity or kerosene.
4. A one liter bottle in the toilet tank saves over a liter of water on each flush.
5. The automatic faucet on the sink for washing hands helps reduce water usage.
6. Using only olive oil based soap in the shower and for washing hands polutes the water less as it is biodegradable.
7. My home's special septic tank has four sections which helps natural bacterias to break down the waste before it runs off into the city sewage system.
8. Planting trees and growing herbs, vegetables, & fruit helps reduce my carbon footprint. It also supplies me with fresh produce!
9. Always turning off lights when leaving a room helps reduce electricity usage.
10. Driving slowly, avoiding sudden acceleration, and cycling in town drastically reduces gasoline consumption.
