English immersion is definitely the best way for Japanese children to learn to communicate in English. Canada pioneered such programs in the 1960’s as a means for children of English-speaking parents to learn French. It has proved very successful especially for children living in communities where only English is used. In these special programs at primary and secondary schools French is used as a teaching tool thus "immersing" the children in the language. Subjects such as math, science, social studies, and music, and other activities such as meals or everyday tasks, are conducted in the foreign language. Children may not understand all the details at first but have a natural ability, which quickly disappears as they get older, to fill in the gaps.
AGORA’s language program is based on this model for its entire curriculum. AGORA’s English Immersion Kindergarten (AKG), established in 2000, immerses children in English from the age of two and a half. By the time they enter elementary school they would have lived through over 3360 hours of English. Upon graduation these children enter the AGORA Grade School program (AGS) which is also a perfect match for returnees, children returning from extended stays abroad. Finally, the language school division (ALS), catering to the general public, covers the full spectrum from babies to seniors and conducts all its classes entirely in English. Though the language exposure is reduced ALS students also benefit from total immersion during class time.
